Statistics for PhD Students in 2017-2018 (Etterbeek and Jette)

The Central PhD office organizes the course Statistics for PhD Students in the first semester of 2017-2018 on the Campus Jette, and in the second semester on the Campus Etterbeek.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with the following competences:

  • solid basic knowledge of statistics
  • ability to independently read and consult statistical literature
  • ability to perform a data analysis starting from raw data
  • Basic knowledge of statistical software ) 
  • knowledge to access advanced courses in statistics

It is strongly recommended that participants have a basic knowledge of of linear algebra (matrix computations) and mathematical analysis (integral and differential calculus).

Students should be willing in participating in an (anonymous) online survey collecting data about study field, study interests, and some background characteristics. Methods explained in the course will be applied to this data.  

The course uses flipping-the-classroom techniques, meaning that students will be asked to read short texts or watch short videos in preparation of the course.



  • Campus Jette: Tuesdays 9:00 – 13:00
  • Room:  informaticalokaal/PC-room 1 Jette
  • Credits: you can obtain 6 credits in cluster 1 of the Doctoral Training Programme if your final evaluation is successful.
  • Evaluation: oral presentation of a final project
  • Registration is compulsory, use this form (the signature of the lecturer is not necessary in this case, but we do need the signature of your supervisor): regular courses form
