Sample size calculation is necessary to determine how many datapoints are needed to make a correct decision on the outcome of a specific experiment (either in vitro or in vivo). This workshop aims to introduce researchers to this essential topic of sample size calculations. Concepts related to sample size like power, effect sizes, and error types are discussed and exemplified using the free software tool GPower. Small exercises with GPower will challenge participants to reason with these concepts and offer relevant practice.

Completion of this workshop will allow participants to do sample size calculations themselves using GPower for simple but common research settings.

It will also prepare participants for a more advanced workshop on sample size derivation in the future.

Requirements:

If you want to use your own device; GPower should be downloaded and ready to use on your laptop. PC with GPower installed will be provided.

Download G*Power 3.1.9.2 for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10 (about 20 MB) here. Please make sure to choose “unpack with folders” in your unzip tool.
