DSh The Beginning of Chinese Wisdom: An Introduction to the Early Chinese Philosophy

The Confucius Institute at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel offers a general introduction course to the early Chinese philosophy from the perspective of comparative studies. Chinese philosphy has its own origin and categories. Tracing back the philosophical tradition to its beginning, the lecture examines different schools of thought in the Pre-Qin period (before 221 B.C.). This turbulent and interesting period saw the rise of influential schools of thought, such as Confucianism, Taoism, Mohism and many others. The course gives a deeper insight in the nature and characteristics of Chinese philosophy and makes a comparison with Western philosophy. The goal of the course is threefold: to offer new ways of thinking to approach life and its problems, to prepare students for a balanced dialogue in a multicultural world and to foster a sense of appreciation for the unique heritage of different cultures.
