Gender Seminar: women and leadership - University of Hasselt

women and leadership

On May 24, 2017, the doctoral schools of Hasselt University are organizing a fourth edition of the yearly 'gender seminar'. This year's topic is women and leadership.

09:30 - 9:45: Welcome

09:45 - 10:30: Walking fine lines: How to find and keep balance and positive perspective as a woman leader
Prof. Dr Margot Gerittsen (Stanford University)

As a student, I was certain that by the time I'd be old, which according to my 18-year old self is just about now, women leaders would be common place and a talk about the particular challenges of women in leadership would no longer be deemed interesting. Alas, we are not yet there. On the positive side, we are more aware than before of barriers women leaders face, and renewed efforts in industry, academia and government to support and promote women leaders are under way. I look forward to sharing with you my experiences and those of colleagues at Stanford and Silicon Valley and thoughts about how to avoid stress and conflict and do well, despite challenges, as a woman leader or aspiring leader.

10.30 – 11.30: Reaching the top - Do you have what it takes?
Mirella Visser

Women leaders in society are still scarce, despite the fact that women have been graduating from universities at almost the same rate as men for two decades now. What is blocking womens progress to senior and top positions? How can women navigate these barriers in order to develop their true potential, enriching the world with their leadership skills? What will the changing world of work mean for leadership skills of the future and for womens position? In my work I combine academic research with practical know how and personal experiences about successful strategies you can use to become the architect of your own career.
